I didn’t choose the title for the movie ‘Eddie Stone: Superstar’.  Had I chosen the title it would’ve been something more like ‘Eddie Stone: Untouchable Red Hot Mega Ultra Shooting Star’… or something a little more catchy.

Wow.  Wow.  Wow.  What great timing the universe has.  Not only am I deep in talks and discussions about my new website extraordinaire AND filming my porn star reality show with OUTtv in the coming summer months, but Chi Chi LaRue in her infinite wisdom has deemed it time to release an Eddie Stone best of.

Perfect timing as all my project come together (did someone say book deal?)

Watching the trailer for the movie is like looking at an old photo album or school year book.  Faces, asses and cocks all came flooding back from the past… ahhhhh.

So, I’m in Montreal with Shaun, he’s just completed the PWA Friends For Life Bike Rally, and I’m off to have brunch with my mom. I thought a daytime meal out on a patio in the sunshine would help lend some levity to the situation. Of course, I met her at her’s and we walked down to a little brunch spot around the corner.

We chatted and laughed and when we got about half way through the meal (I didn’t want to save it for the end because if things went poorly I didn’t want to end on that note) when I said,

Me: “So have you been on the PROUD website lately?” (knowing full well that a link to the OUTLOOKS article that outs me as a porn star appears on my show page.

Mom: “Yesterday.”

Of course that doesn’t mean she saw or even read the article, she could just have been listening to the station online.

Me: “Have you seen the article on me and Shaun in OUTLOOKS?”

Mom: “No. What’s that?”

Shit. I thought if at least she had read the large print in the article she would already know and this would just be a formality.

Me: “Oh, well, it’s this great article in a nationwide magazine talking about me and Shaun and the radio and our pasts…”

I take a gulp of coffee

Me: “…and what makes us interesting as a couple.”

Mom: “That’s nice I’d love to read it!”

Me: “Ya. It’s a great article.” I had hit a dead end so I tried another tactic. “Oh, and I pitched a reality show idea to OUTtv and they loved it. We start filming this fall!”

Mom: “What? You never told me about a reality show! What’s it about?”

Here we are ladies and gentlemen, this is it, there was no going back now!

Me: “Well, it’s a reality show where contestants compete to become the next big porn star… and I’m the host.”

I paused here, hoping somehow the pieces would come together by themselves. They didn’t… It’s easier in my family when the pieces DO come together by themselves because we just don’t talk about things like this. We just don’t.

Mom: “Because of the radio, you’re going to host?”

I took a deep breath and said

Me: “No, because when I was in L.A. I became a pretty well known name as an adult performer.”

There was a moment when I wasn’t sure she had heard, or understood. It was only a second or two, but it felt like forever. Her face did not change, but there was something in her eye that said ‘So, that’s what was going on in L.A., so many questions answered.’

I wasn’t ready for what she asked next, although it’s all I ever needed to hear.

Mom: “When do you start filming?”

When Dorothy says in The Wizard of Oz, “There’s no place like home.” She wasn’t kidding. After so many years in Southern California and being so far away from my family and old acquaintances, it was great to be home in Toronto!

Now that I was back, I wasted no time. My second day home, I knocked on PROUD FM’s door and announced that I was in town. Shaun Proulx, who had interviewed me via the phone from L.A., seized the opportunity to do a live tete a tete in the studio. I mentioned off the air that I was back in town and looking to get into radio. (Here’s a tip for anyone aspiring to do anything.. offer to work for free!)

I started off interning for The Shaun Proulx Show, when luck of all luck the receptionist quit. (No, I did not push her down a flight of stairs! It was through an open window!)

I was in, if only as a receptionist. But when you’re eager, willing and patient, opportunities arise. Before I knew it I was hosting Saturday afternoons. Then, I was bumped up to Mid-days!

Ready to host the Toronto Pride stage

While my radio career was taking off, I also took the opportunity to pitch a reality show idea I had while living in L.A..  A porn star reality show, where I’m the host, and potential porn stars compete against each other to become the next big porn name!

OUTtv loved the idea! We begin filming in the fall.

During this time, and in the background, Shaun and I were getting closer… and closer… and closer, until one fateful night at Circa nightclub the spark burst into a flame and our romance began.

Being two visible gay media types, we were approached by Canada’s National Gay magazine, OUTLOOKS, to do an article. In it, we appear together and the interview is very candid about both our pasts.

Slowly, the gap between Eddie Stone porn star and Patrick Marano radio host was closing. OUTtv was advertising on PROUD FM. Eddie Stone fans were listening to Patrick on the radio and the OUTLOOKS interview brought both identities out into the open.

I hadn’t left Eddie Stone in L.A., he is a part of me, he is my creation and he will continue to live on in my website and my reality show.

Eddie and Patrick were going mainstream together and it was time to tell mom.

Everything was in order. Shaun was doing the PWA Friends For Life Bike Rally from Toronto to Montreal. I was meeting him in Montreal. That would be the perfect time to tell her…. face to face!
